Three of the biggest AI companies shipped the same product in six weeks. Meta launched Muse on September 8, OpenAI launched dots at DevDay on September 29, and on October 21 Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet. Each one is an agent with its own cloud computer that comes to you, instead of waiting for you to open a chat.

The launch posts read alike, but the products aren't the same. They differ on who can get in, what they ask before acting, and how they bill your plan. I build octos, which compete with all three, so read my verdicts with that in mind. The facts about Duet, Dots and Muse below come from the vendors' own pages, plus launch coverage for dates, all checked October 22, 2026.

The short answer: Claude Duet is Anthropic's proactive AI agent. It runs on Claude Opus 5.5, sends you a morning brief from your connected apps, checks them every few hours, and works on its own cloud computer. Before anything leaves your hands (a message, a payment, a signature, a deletion) it stops and asks. Right now it's a waitlisted research preview for US Pro and Max subscribers, from $20 a month, and its background checks draw on your normal Claude limits. Pick Duet if your work already runs through Claude and the more than 6,000 connectors and plugins in its marketplace. Pick ChatGPT dots if you live in Slack or Teams and pay for ChatGPT Pro. Pick Meta Muse if you want a free tier and WhatsApp.

What is Claude Duet?

Claude Duet is a proactive AI assistant from Anthropic that comes to you first. It reads your connected apps, tells you what needs you, and does the work you hand it in the background. The Introducing Claude Duet announcement (Anthropic, 2026):

  • Morning brief, then quiet. Every morning you get a summary of what matters most in the apps you've connected. After that it checks those apps every few hours and messages you only when something needs you. Anthropic says it doesn't check nonstop "because checking nonstop would use up your plan's limits much faster".
  • Its own computer. Duet works in a cloud VM that has a browser of its own, so your laptop and phone can be off while it works.
  • Your Claude context. It carries over the memory, skills and connected apps from your Claude account, and everything happens in one ongoing thread, by text or voice.
  • Tasks of any size. Anthropic lists scheduling meetings, building dashboards, financial and sales forecasts, prototypes and web apps. Through the Claude Marketplace connectors it can chase unpaid invoices in QuickBooks or Stripe, run payroll in Gusto, send agreements through Docusign, and manage a Shopify store.
  • The model. It's built on Claude Opus 5.5.

Anthropic says this Claude personal assistant is built for professionals and small business owners, and the product page's demo is a café chain owner's morning: a health permit to approve, a Series A deck to fix, refunds to send.

What Claude Duet asks before it acts

Duet reads, drafts and prepares on its own, and it waits for your approval before four kinds of action: sending a message, making a payment, signing a document, and deleting anything. Some actions are blocked even with your approval: "A few things are off-limits even with your approval, like trading securities or moving money between accounts."

The safety design reuses parts Anthropic already ships:

  • Credentials follow the Claude Managed Agents design, so Duet "never directly sees your passwords or sign-in tokens".
  • Actions go through the auto mode classifier that Claude Code uses.
  • A new classifier rejects requests to share the strictest tier of information, such as card numbers and government IDs. Health and personal-finance details pass only when you've told Duet to send them.
  • Purchases go through Link, Stripe's wallet, which pays with a virtual card. Shop Pay works for online checkout. Logins through 1Password are "coming soon".

What isn't ready yet

Anthropic lists the gaps itself. Duet "might misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent". It's weaker at personal errands such as booking tickets. It can't show you its browser yet, and for now Duet is a separate app from Claude itself. The product page FAQ (Anthropic, 2026) adds that it "can miss something that arrives between checking in with you".

Four rows carry the decision.

Access decides first. Duet is US-only, and Muse is in the US and Canada. Dots isn't offered on Pro in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, though Business Premium and Enterprise are rolling out worldwide. If you're in Berlin, dots on a business workspace is the only one of the three you can get, and even then it arrives gradually.

Billing behaves differently. Duet spends the same pool as your Claude chats and Claude Code: Claude's pricing page (Anthropic, 2026) says activity on web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code "all draws from the same pool", on a rolling five-hour window with weekly limits on top. So on a $20 Pro plan, the morning brief and the checks every few hours come out of the allowance you code and chat with.

OpenAI says the opposite for dots: "Conversations with your dot don't count toward your ChatGPT usage limits." SiliconANGLE's launch report adds that terms for each plan come after the first month, so check again in November. And the cheapest ChatGPT Pro plan is $100 a month. Muse is free for most uses; Meta's posts say only that subscription plans exist "for people who want to do more".

Channels set the habit. You'll answer whichever agent shows up where you already are. Dots reach you in Slack and Teams, and you can call yours from ChatGPT. Muse works inside WhatsApp. Duet has its own app, which is one more place to check, and Anthropic says it will learn from early users "how the two work together".

Watching the computer. Dots document a Take over control for the browser. Duet can't show you its browser yet. Muse gives you an audit trail of what it did and plans to do. Duet shows you each sensitive action before it runs and lets you see what it's doing.

Dots vs Muse: where Claude Duet sits between them

OpenAI connects a dot to Slack and Teams channels, where colleagues already are, and lets background agents split up the work. Meta says Muse "was built to work for billions of people worldwide", with no learning curve, and three weeks later launched Muse for Small Business, which adds Instagram analytics, Facebook Pages and Meta ad accounts to connectors like QuickBooks, Shopify and Stripe.

Anthropic says it built Duet "for professionals and small business owners with more on their plates than they can track", and its examples (QuickBooks, Gusto payroll, Docusign, Shopify, HubSpot) read like a small company's back office. Muse and Duet overlap most here.

  • Your day runs in Slack or Teams, with colleagues in the loop: dots.
  • Your day runs in WhatsApp and Instagram, and you want to start free: Muse.
  • You run the books, payroll and contracts yourself, and you already pay for Claude: Duet, once you clear the waitlist.

Before you connect your inbox

Whichever one you pick, set its limits on day one. Each step below uses a control the vendor documents:

  1. Connect the fewest apps that cover the job. Duet lets you disconnect any app. Muse lets you set how much access each app gets, and for email whether it can only read or also send. Start read-only where you can.
  2. Tell it what's worth interrupting you for. Duet accepts "what you want to hear about and how often". Dots let you route routine progress to ChatGPT and decisions to Slack. A vague brief means a noisy agent.
  3. Write your hard lines as rules, not wishes. Dots have optional custom rules on top of the built-in review. Duet blocks some actions even with your approval (Anthropic's examples are trading securities and moving money between accounts), so check that its limits cover your risks.
  4. Turn off training if you care. Meta says you can opt out of your Muse interactions training its models.
  5. Watch the bill for a week. On Duet, compare your usage with the week before. Background checks and big tasks like a financial model "require more model turns and background work".

Where octos fit

Duet, Dots and Muse each give you one agent that tries to see everything. Octos split the work: one octo per thing you work on, such as the blog, a client or your money. Each has its own folder, memory, routines and model. I build octos.

  • What octos do differently. Each octo runs on any model in the catalog, at the provider's price plus 5%, so the triage octo can be cheap and the research octo can be strong. You reach them in Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp or the panel, and routines run them on a timer. An octo with nothing to do sleeps and costs only storage, and Pro is $20 your first month, then $50, for up to 10 octos (pricing).
  • What they don't do. Octos don't read your inbox or calendar yet. You forward or CC an email to an octo's own address instead. They don't pay for things, and there's no morning brief over QuickBooks. If that's the job, Duet is the better tool today, and Muse if purchases are the point.
  • How they decide. Octos work on their own and ask in the chat only when a decision is yours. A guardrail rule blocks a tool outright. Nothing waits in an approval queue.

The full model and computer comparison is in our Dots vs octos launch post. For scheduled jobs, see routines.

Which one to choose

Choose Claude Duet if

  • You already pay for Claude Pro or Max and you're in the US. Duet inherits your memory, skills and connectors, so there's little to set up.
  • The job is your back office. Anthropic's own examples are invoices, payroll, contracts and a Shopify store.
  • You can wait. It's a waitlisted research preview, and Anthropic says plainly that it can misjudge what's urgent.

Choose ChatGPT dots if

  • Your team talks in Slack or Teams. A dot answers in channels and DMs and keeps one memory across them.
  • You want to watch and take over. Its docs describe a Take over control for its browser; Duet can't show you its browser yet.
  • You're already on ChatGPT Pro. Dot conversations don't count against your ChatGPT limits.

Choose Meta Muse if

  • You want to start free. Muse is free for most uses.
  • You live in WhatsApp. You message Muse like a contact.
  • Purchases are the job. Muse's Link checkout comes with Link's purchase protections.

Choose octos if

  • You want several agents, each on its own job and model, reachable in Telegram, Slack or WhatsApp.
  • You need the engine to be open. The same open-source agent runs on your laptop from the CLI.

FAQ

Is Claude Duet free?

No. It's included in Claude Pro ($20 a month, or $17 billed yearly) and Max (from $100 a month) during the research preview, with no separate fee. It shares your plan's usage limits, and its background checks count toward them.

How do I get Claude Duet?

Join the waitlist from the Claude Duet page. Access starts with US Pro and Max subscribers, and Anthropic emails you when it's ready. Team and Enterprise plans aren't included yet.

Is Claude Duet available outside the US?

Not yet. The research preview starts with US Pro and Max subscribers, and Anthropic's announcement gives no date for other countries.

What's the difference between Claude Duet and the Claude app?

In the Claude app, nothing happens until you start a chat. Duet starts the conversation: the morning brief, tasks you send it as messages, and a ping when a task finishes or needs you to approve something. It uses the same account, memory, skills and connectors, but for now it's a separate app.

What is a proactive AI agent?

A proactive AI agent watches the apps you connect and messages you first, instead of waiting for a prompt. Duet, Dots and Muse all work this way, each on its own cloud computer, and each asks before sensitive actions.

The real question

Three labs agree on what a proactive agent is: a cloud computer, your apps, work that carries on while you're away, and a pause before anything irreversible. What separates them in October 2026 is access, where they reach you and how they bill you. Check those three before the model name. And whichever you pick, give it read access for a week before you let it send anything.
