Moving targets (as of late 2026 — confirm live before stating)

  • US: the $100,000 H-1B entry fee (Sept 2025 proclamation, renewed Sept 2026) is tied up in court — check USCIS for whether it is owed; H-1B cap selection is wage-weighted from FY2027 (Level IV = 4 entries, Level I = 1); travel-ban proclamations and social-media vetting have expanded.
  • UK: Skilled Worker needs RQF 6 roles and £41,700 general salary since 22 July 2025; visa-free visitors, EU citizens included, need an ETA; "earned settlement" (10-year baseline ILR) was proposed but not in force by mid-2026.
  • Schengen: the Entry/Exit System is fully live since 10 April 2026 — biometrics replace stamps and the 90/180-day count is automatic, so overstays are recorded exactly; ETIAS has not launched (slipping toward 2027).
  • Germany: the 3-year fast-track naturalisation was abolished in October 2025; 5 years is the minimum.

Document discipline (the slow path — start first)

Civil documents (birth, marriage) → apostille (Hague members) or consular legalization (non-members) → certified translation per the destination's standard. Financial proof: authentic statements with history ("seasoning") — never manufactured balances. Police certificates from every country lived in beyond the threshold (commonly 6–12 months). Medical exams where required, from panel/approved physicians only. Passport validity ≥6 months beyond the stay is the near-universal floor. Every document authentic — a fake document is a permanent-record problem, not a shortcut.

Where people get hurt — flag proactively

  • Status gaps: never let status lapse while waiting; bridging/extension rules exist — find them before expiry. Overstays trigger bans on a severity ladder (US pattern: 180+ days → 3-year bar, 1+ year → 10-year bar, triggered on departure).
  • Unauthorized work: tourist status + working (including remote-work grey zones — check the country's actual rule) risks removal and refusals for years.
  • Misrepresentation: any lie or material omission — even "small", even by an agent on your behalf — is the nuclear pitfall: long or permanent bans, and it follows you to other countries' applications. Accuracy over optimism, every form, every answer.
  • Unlicensed "agents" and notario fraud (in Latin America a notario is a credentialed legal professional; in the US it is not — that confusion is the scam): verify representatives against the official register — licensed lawyer or accredited representative (US: state bar + DOJ-accredited; Canada: RCIC register; Australia: MARA register; UK: IAA-regulated advisers pattern) — websearch the destination's register; guaranteed-outcome promises are the fraud tell.
  • Deadlines: appeal and reapply windows are short (often 14–90 days from decision); refusal letters state them — read the letter first, always.

Professional-referral triggers — say it plainly

Refusals with complex grounds, any inadmissibility history (criminal record, prior refusal/ban, health grounds), borderline category fits, employer-compliance questions, asylum (immediately), and anything where the user is about to sign or submit under uncertainty. Prepared-questions list + the register link = the handoff done right.
