An Antigravity alternative that stays open source and runs any model

Keep the terminal loop: read the repo, edit files, run the tests, report back. Run it on Gemini with your own AI Studio key, or on Claude, GPT, DeepSeek, GLM or a model on your own machine, from one Apache-2.0 binary.

curl -fsSL https://octomind.run/install.sh | bash

Verdict: stay with Google Antigravity or switch to octomind

Stay with Google Antigravity if

  • You want a desktop app that runs several agents in parallel, or extensions for VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Zed and Xcode. Octomind is a terminal agent.
  • You want to start at $0. Antigravity is free for individuals with weekly rate limits. The octomind binary is free, but every model call bills to your provider key.
  • You want the agent to ask before it runs commands, and a sandbox with no network access. Octomind has no approval prompts, and its optional sandbox blocks writes only.
  • Your Google AI Pro or Ultra plan already covers you, Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 included.

Switch to octomind if

  • You want source you can read and fork. Octomind is Apache-2.0. Antigravity CLI replaced the Apache-2.0 Gemini CLI for unpaid and Google One users, and press reported it has no open-source repository.
  • You want models that are not on Google's list: DeepSeek, GLM, GPT, Kimi, or a model on your own machine through local:. Gemini stays one flag away with google-studio: and your key.
  • You want a spend stop in scripts. Octomind stops a request at the dollar cap you set and exits with code 75 in headless runs. Antigravity documents a timeout for headless runs, not a budget.
  • You want lessons kept without asking for them. Octomind saves the fixes you give it, each quoted from your message. Antigravity saves a lesson when you type /learn and approve it.

Google Antigravity vs octomind

Price to startIndividuals pay $0 a month with basic weekly rate limits. Google AI Pro and Ultra add higher quota. As of October 2026. antigravity.googleThe binary is free under Apache-2.0. You pay your model provider per token, or nothing in API fees with a local model. Cargo.toml:6
Models you can useGoogle's list: Gemini 4 Argon, Gemini 3.x Flash and 3.1 Pro, Claude Sonnet and Opus 5.5, and GPT-OSS 120B until November 2, 2026. Only Gemini 3.8 Flash is on every plan; Gemini 4 Argon and Claude 5.5 need Pro or Ultra, and the other Gemini 3.x models are Enterprise-only. Local models are documented for its SDK. antigravity.googleAny provider:model string with -m or /model, from 32 provider prefixes: google-studio:, google-vertex:, anthropic:, openai:, deepseek:, openrouter:, and local: for Ollama or LM Studio. /docs/usage/04-providers
Sign-inA personal Google Account through a browser sign-in, or a Gemini API key for the CLI. Headless runs reuse the cached credentials of an interactive session. antigravity.googleNo account needed. Export any provider key, or run octomind login for the default octohub:auto model. /docs/usage/04-providers
Source codeThe official pages state no license. Press reported in May 2026 that Antigravity CLI has no open-source repository, unlike the Apache-2.0 Gemini CLI it replaced. letsdatascience.comApache-2.0. Read it, fork it, build it with cargo. Cargo.toml:6
Project instructionsAGENTS.md or GEMINI.md at every folder level up to the workspace root, plus .agents/rules/ and global rules in ~/.gemini/. antigravity.googleAGENTS.md in the directory you start in. GEMINI.md and parent folders are not read, so rename the file and both tools share it. src/session/chat/session/utils.rs:102
Skills and MCP serversSkills in .agents/skills/<name>/SKILL.md. MCP servers in mcp_config.json, local stdio or remote, with automatic OAuth for servers that support dynamic client registration. antigravity.googleReads the same .agents/skills/ folder in your repo, and ~/.config/agents/skills/ for global ones. MCP servers go in TOML as [[mcp.servers]], stdio or http. /docs/usage/15-skills
Spend limit in scriptsHeadless mode (-p) prints the answer or a JSON envelope with token usage. Its documented limit is --print-timeout. No budget flag is listed. antigravity.googlemax_request_spending_threshold stops a request in interactive and headless runs, and a headless run that hits it exits with code 75. An in-flight call can still overshoot. src/session/chat/session/messages.rs:162
Approvals and sandboxAsk, allow and deny lists. The CLI edits files in your project freely and asks before commands, MCP tools and web actions. On macOS and Linux, the app's default sandbox gives commands no network access. antigravity.googleNo approval prompts. Guardrails in .agents/guardrails.toml block matching calls, and --sandbox limits writes on Linux and macOS. The sandbox is off by default. /docs/usage/18-guardrails
Learning from corrections/learn, typed after a correction, proposes a rule or a skill. Files are written only after you approve the proposal. antigravity.googleOn by default. Lessons come only from your corrections and stated rules, each quoting your message, and are recalled in later sessions. They are plain markdown files. src/supervisor/learning/extract.rs:16

Octomind on the open model glm-5.2: 24/25 real pull requests

We have not run Antigravity on octobench, so this is not a head-to-head and it says nothing about Gemini. It shows what the harness does on a model you can pick yourself. octobench is 25 tasks taken from merged pull requests in open-source projects and checked by hidden tests. Octomind on glm-5.2, an open model, solved 24 of 25 for $63.43 in 3.6h. The GLM runs went through Ollama cloud, which has no prompt caching, so that dollar figure is a worst case. The same table has Claude Code, Codex and opencode on their stock setups.

How to switch from Google Antigravity

  1. Install octomind and keep Gemini on your own key

    One script installs the binary to ~/.local/bin on macOS or Linux. Create a key in Google AI Studio and pass any Gemini model id with google-studio:, or swap in another provider. -m sets the main model only; supervisor and compression calls stay on octohub:auto until you set [supervisor.model] and [compression.model], or run octomind login.

    curl -fsSL https://octomind.run/install.sh | bash

    export GOOGLE_STUDIO_API_KEY=... # from Google AI Studio
    octomind run developer:general -m google-studio:<gemini-model-id>

    # or any other provider, or a model on your own machine
    # octomind run developer:general -m deepseek:deepseek-flash
    # octomind run developer:general -m local:qwen3-coder
  2. Bring your rules, skills and MCP servers over

    Rename GEMINI.md to AGENTS.md. Antigravity reads AGENTS.md too, so both tools share one file. Skills in the repo under .agents/skills/ work as they are; copy global ones into ~/.config/agents/skills/. Move each server from mcp_config.json into a [[mcp.servers]] block in a TOML file in the octomind config directory.

    git mv GEMINI.md AGENTS.md
    mkdir -p ~/.config/agents/skills
    # global skills: the app and IDE keep them in ~/.gemini/config/skills,
    # the Antigravity CLI in ~/.gemini/antigravity-cli/skills
    cp -R ~/.gemini/config/skills/* ~/.config/agents/skills/

    # was in mcp_config.json: "playwright": { "command": "npx", "args": ["@playwright/mcp@latest"] }
    cat > ~/.local/share/octomind/config/mcp-playwright.toml <<'EOF'
    [[mcp.servers]]
    name = "playwright"
    type = "stdio"
    command = "npx"
    args = ["@playwright/mcp@latest"]
    timeout_seconds = 30
    tools = []
    auto_bind = ["developer:general"]
    EOF
  3. Run your first job, with a spend stop

    Run octomind run developer:general in the repo for an interactive session. For scripts and CI, pipe the task in. The -c flag caps each request in US dollars, and a run that hits the cap exits with 75 so your script can tell a budget stop from a failure.

    cd ~/your/project
    octomind run developer:general -m google-studio:<gemini-model-id>      # interactive

    echo "The test suite fails. Find the bug, fix it, run the tests." \
      | octomind -c max_request_spending_threshold=0.50 \
          run developer:general -m google-studio:<gemini-model-id> --format plain
    echo "exit $?"                                                         # 75 = spend stop

Other options worth a look

  • Gemini CLI with an API key

    Still Apache-2.0, and it still signs in with a Gemini API key or Vertex AI. Its README says it is not optimized for the latest Gemini models. It suits you if you liked the old CLI and can live without Google login.

  • opencode

    An MIT-licensed agent for the terminal, desktop and IDE that connects 75+ providers through Models.dev, local models included. It suits you if you want open source and a wide provider list.

Where Google Antigravity is better

  • No desktop app and no IDE extensions

    Antigravity has an app for running agents in parallel, its own IDE, and extensions for five editors. Octomind is a terminal agent. It speaks the Agent Client Protocol through octomind acp, and the docs show a Zed setup. Read more →

  • No approval prompts, and the sandbox blocks writes only

    Tools run without asking. Guards in .agents/guardrails.toml block matching calls, and --sandbox limits writes on Linux and macOS. It does not cut the network, it is off by default, and it does nothing on Windows. Read more →

  • No free model quota

    Antigravity's individual tier is $0 with weekly limits, Gemini included. With octomind, every call bills to your provider key, unless you run a local model and pay only for your hardware. Read more →

  • GEMINI.md and folder-level rules are not read

    Octomind reads one AGENTS.md from the directory you start in. Antigravity merges rules from every folder up to the workspace root and from ~/.gemini/. Fold what you need into that one file.

Questions

What is the best Antigravity alternative?

It depends on why you are leaving. To keep the old open-source CLI, run Gemini CLI with an API key. For an open-source agent with the widest provider list, opencode. For an Apache-2.0 terminal agent that runs Gemini on your key, or any other model, with a per-request spend stop and lessons kept from your corrections, octomind.

Is there a Gemini CLI alternative now that Google login stopped working?

Since June 18, 2026, Login with Google no longer works in Gemini CLI for Code Assist for individuals, Google AI Pro and Ultra users. The Apache-2.0 repo still works with a Gemini API key or Vertex AI. Octomind is an open-source alternative: export GOOGLE_STUDIO_API_KEY and run it with -m google-studio:<model>.

Antigravity vs Claude Code: which one?

Antigravity is Google's agent platform, an app, CLI and IDE, free to start on Gemini, with Claude Opus and Sonnet 5.5 on paid Google AI plans. Claude Code is Anthropic's agent for Claude models, included with every paid Claude plan but not the Free plan. Neither is open source. Octomind runs either family, or others, from your own key under Apache-2.0.

Is Google Antigravity open source?

The official pages state no license, and press reported that Antigravity CLI has no open-source repository. Gemini CLI, which it replaced for unpaid users, is Apache-2.0. Octomind is Apache-2.0 too.

Does octomind learn like /learn, or like Google Research Harness²?

Antigravity's /learn runs when you type it and writes a rule or skill after you approve. Harness² is a Google Research framework for "recursive agent harnessing": the harness around a fixed model is rewritten. It is Apache-2.0 research code, "not an officially supported Google product", not an agent for daily work. Octomind learns on its own from your corrections, each lesson quoting your message.

Can I still use Gemini models in octomind?

Yes. Use google-studio:<model> with GOOGLE_STUDIO_API_KEY from Google AI Studio, or google-vertex:<model> with Vertex AI credentials. You can switch to another provider mid-session with /model.

Try it on the job Google Antigravity does for you now.

Apache-2.0 and any model. Install it, then follow the three steps above.

curl -fsSL https://octomind.run/install.sh | bash
