The opencode alternative that finishes more of the work on the same model

Same open model, same endpoint, same prices. On 25 real pull requests octomind solved 24 to opencode's 19, and paid $63.43 where opencode paid $129.54. The harness was the only difference.

curl -fsSL https://octomind.run/install.sh | bash

Verdict: stay with opencode or switch to octomind

Stay with opencode if

  • You want the agent in a full terminal UI, a desktop app or a VS Code, Cursor or Windsurf extension. Octomind has a plain line prompt and editor access over ACP only.
  • You need a provider octomind does not list (opencode reaches 75+ through Models.dev) or you sign in with GitHub Copilot.
  • An OpenCode Go plan at $10 a month covers your usage and you are happy with the results you get.
  • A large community matters to you: opencode had about 220,000 GitHub stars and 950 contributors in October 2026.

Switch to octomind if

  • You want more tasks finished on the model you already use: 24 of 25 against 19 of 25 with both agents on glm-5.2.
  • Your token bill matters: the same 25 tasks cost $63.43 with octomind and $129.54 with opencode.
  • You want "done" checked: a second model compares the end state with your request before the turn is accepted.
  • You run the agent from scripts, CI or a long-lived process and need a hard spend stop with its own exit code.

Same model, same endpoint: 24 of 25 against 19 of 25

On 2026-07-30 we ran both agents on 25 tasks taken from pull requests merged in 2026, in Python, PHP, Rust, C++ and JavaScript. Both used glm-5.2 through Ollama cloud at the same list price, with no prompt caching for either. Each ran its stock command: octomind run developer:general --format=jsonl and opencode run --auto --format json. The project's own held-out tests decided pass or fail. Octomind solved 24, opencode 19: 5 more tasks for $63.43 instead of $129.54, about half the bill. An LLM judge scored the work 2264 to 2093 out of 2500. Octomind was not faster: 3.6h of wall time against 3.3h. Both missed the same yaml-cpp case, which points at the model, not the harness. Read the limits too: this is one run of 25 tasks on our own benchmark, and octomind ran with a staged tap and a build that added a check for unfinished hand-backs. Every case, trace and judge verdict is public at a pinned commit, so you can rerun it.

How to switch from opencode

  1. Install octomind and connect a model

    octomind login connects OctoHub, which also runs the supervisor and compression models behind the verify-gate. To bring your own key instead, export it and set [model], [supervisor.model] and [compression.model] in ~/.local/share/octomind/config/config.toml. Model names change from opencode’s provider/model to provider:model.

    curl -fsSL https://octomind.run/install.sh | bash
    octomind login # one login covers the main, supervisor and compression models

    # or bring your own key (Z.AI serves the GLM models), then set the three
    # model slots in config.toml, e.g. name = "zai:<model>"
    export ZAI_API_KEY=...
  2. Bring AGENTS.md and your MCP servers

    AGENTS.md in the project root works as it is. If you only have CLAUDE.md, link it, since octomind does not read that name. Each entry under "mcp" in opencode.json becomes a [[mcp.servers]] block: "local" turns into stdio with the command array split into command and args, and "remote" turns into http. Save the blocks as ~/.local/share/octomind/config/mcp-servers.toml; every .toml file in that folder is merged.

    # ln -s CLAUDE.md AGENTS.md   (only if you have no AGENTS.md)

    [[mcp.servers]]
    name = "github"
    type = "http" # opencode: "remote"
    url = "https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/"
    headers = { Authorization = "Bearer {{ENV:GITHUB_TOKEN}}" }
    timeout_seconds = 30
    tools = []
    auto_bind = ["developer:general"]

    [[mcp.servers]]
    name = "playwright"
    type = "stdio" # opencode: "local"
    command = "npx"
    args = ["@playwright/mcp@latest"]
    timeout_seconds = 30
    tools = []
    auto_bind = ["developer:general"]
  3. Run the first job

    developer:general is the coding agent: files, shell, code search and memory. Its first run fetches the agent and installs its tool binaries, so it needs git, curl and network. The piped form replaces opencode run in scripts and prints one JSON event per line.

    cd ~/code/your-repo
    octomind run developer:general

    # headless, like opencode run --format json
    echo "Fix the failing test in tests/api" | octomind run developer:general --format jsonl

Other options worth a look

  • Claude Code

    For Anthropic models in a terminal, IDE, desktop app or browser. In the same benchmark it solved 23 of 25 on claude-opus-5, a different model, for $81.79.

  • Codex CLI

    For speed and price per run on a ChatGPT plan. It solved 21 of 25 on gpt-5.6-sol for $14.86 in 1.0h, the cheapest and fastest run of the four.

  • Aider

    For a terminal pair programmer that commits every change to git and connects to almost any model, local ones included. We have not benchmarked it.

Where opencode is better

  • No TUI, desktop app or IDE extension

    Octomind is a line prompt with markdown output. Editors reach it over ACP, and the docs show a Zed config; JetBrains and Neovim snippets are untested. If a polished interface is why you use opencode, stay. Read more →

  • Fewer providers and no Copilot sign-in

    Octomind takes 32 provider prefixes against opencode’s 75+. ChatGPT sign-in works; GitHub Copilot sign-in does not exist. Read more →

  • A much smaller community

    opencode listed about 220,000 GitHub stars and 950 contributors in October 2026. You will find fewer tutorials, plugins and answered questions for octomind. Read more →

  • Tools arrive as separate binaries

    File, shell, code-search and memory tools come from companion binaries that the developer:general agent installs on first use. The first run needs network, git and curl. Read more →

  • Telemetry is on by default

    opencode says it stores none of your code or context. Octomind telemetry carries no prompts or code, but at exit it posts usage identifiers, including the role name, to api.octomind.run. Set telemetry = false or OCTOMIND_TELEMETRY=0 to turn it off. Read more →

Questions

What is the best opencode alternative?

It depends on why you are leaving. If you want the same open models with more tasks finished per dollar, octomind solved 24 of 25 to opencode's 19 on glm-5.2 at about half the cost. If you want Anthropic models in a polished app, look at Claude Code. If the cheapest, fastest run matters most, Codex CLI led on both in our benchmark.

opencode vs octomind: which one finishes more tasks?

On our run of 25 real pull requests, octomind. Both used glm-5.2 through the same endpoint at the same prices, and octomind solved 5 more tasks for $63.43 instead of $129.54. It is one run on our own benchmark. A later run with a newer GLM model, written up in our octomind vs opencode post, found a smaller gap on one-shot tasks. Test on your own repository before you rely on it.

Can I keep my AGENTS.md and MCP servers?

Yes. Octomind reads AGENTS.md unchanged from the directory you start in; it does not read CLAUDE.md, so link that file if it is all you have. MCP servers move from the "mcp" block in opencode.json to [[mcp.servers]] blocks in TOML, as stdio or http.

Does octomind have a TUI or a desktop app?

No. It is a line prompt that also works over SSH, in tmux and in CI logs, plus ACP for editors such as Zed. If you rely on the opencode TUI or desktop app, that is a real reason to stay.

Is octomind free like opencode?

The binary is free under Apache-2.0. You pay for model tokens: to your own provider with your key, or through OctoHub if you use octomind login. A per-request spend stop and a per-session checkpoint keep the bill bounded.

Can I use opencode and octomind together?

Yes. Both read AGENTS.md and both speak ACP, so you can keep opencode for interactive work and run octomind from scripts or CI on its own branch. Do not point two agents at the same working tree at the same time.

Try it on the job opencode does for you now.

Apache-2.0 and any model. Install it, then follow the three steps above.

curl -fsSL https://octomind.run/install.sh | bash
