A Claude Cowork alternative that works on any model and reports back in your chat
Hand the job to an octo once, or every day. It works on a cloud computer of your own with the model you pick, and the result lands in Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp or email.
Verdict: stay with Claude Cowork or switch to octomind
Stay with Claude Cowork if
- The work lives on your own computer. Cowork’s desktop app reads and writes the folders you connect and can operate your apps; an octo cannot reach your laptop at all.
- You already pay for Claude Pro or Max and Claude models are all you need. Cowork comes with the plan, from $20 a month ($17 billed annually), with no second bill.
- You want it inside the apps you already use through Claude’s connectors, such as Microsoft 365. Octos cannot open your inbox or calendar.
- You want a check before it acts. By default Claude asks before taking an action.
Switch to octomind if
- You want to pick the model per job: Claude, GPT, GLM or Qwen, all at the provider’s price plus 5%, with no API key to paste.
- You want the result where you already are. Routine reports go to Telegram, Slack, Discord or email, not only into an app.
- You look after several separate things. Each octo has its own folder, memory and schedule, shows what it cost this month, and Pro holds up to 10.
- You want a scheduled job that costs nothing on a quiet day: it reports only when something changed, an optional check can skip the run before any model call, and each run has a cost cap.
Claude Cowork vs octomind
| Aspect | Claude Cowork | octomind |
|---|---|---|
| Models you can use | Claude models only: Fable, Opus, Sonnet and Haiku, depending on the plan. claude.com | Every model in the catalog, including Claude, GPT, GLM and Qwen, at the provider’s price plus 5%. You pick per octo. /pricing |
| Price to start (as of October 2026) | Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front). Max starts at $100. Cowork needs a paid plan. claude.com | Pro is $50 a month, $20 your first month, and includes $50 of usage. Free is the model hub alone, with no octos. /pricing |
| How usage is counted | Usage limits that reset in a rolling five-hour window, plus weekly limits; Cowork uses them faster than chat. Extra usage bills at API rates. claude.com | One dollar balance: model calls at the provider’s price plus 5%, machine time while awake, storage. A sleeping octo costs only storage. /pricing |

| Where the result arrives | In the task’s session in the Claude app, with a push notification on your phone when it is done. support.claude.com | In Telegram, Slack, Discord or email once connected, and in the panel. Failures always reach you. /use/cloud/telegram-ai-agent |
| Before it acts | By default Claude asks before taking an action; you can let it keep working and check in only when needed. claude.com | No approval popups. Rules and a cost cap are set in advance. /blog/openclaw-alternatives |
A real job: a baseline, then "Nothing changed"
On 10 October an octo on a demo account was asked to watch zapier.com/pricing and n8n.io/pricing and report only what changed. The first check had nothing to compare with, so it saved a baseline and listed every Zapier plan. The second check that day came back in one line: "Nothing changed — both zapier.com/pricing and n8n.io/pricing are identical to the baseline captured earlier today (prices, plans, and wording all match)." Both checks cost $0.66 together. The screenshot, from our routines post, is a routine’s run history, one row per run: the run that found nothing to report cost $0.00 and the one that stopped at its cost cap $0.50.

How to switch from Claude Cowork
Start Pro and type the job
Sign up at octomind.run/app and pick Pro: $20 your first month, then $50. Type the job the way you would in Cowork. Your first job creates an octo with its own folder and machine.
Bring your instructions and your chat
Cowork saves each scheduled task’s prompt as its instructions: copy that prompt into the job, and put standing rules on the octo’s Can do tab, which it reads at the start of every conversation. Then open Settings, Connections and connect Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp, Discord or email.
Run it once, then schedule it
On the routine form, press Run it now and read the real result and its cost. Then pick the day and hour, set Report back to "when something changed", and save.
Other options worth a look
OpenClaw
Open source (MIT) on your own computer, with hosted or local models and 20+ chat apps; you run it and secure it yourself.
Hermes Agent
Open source (MIT), any model, a built-in scheduler that delivers to Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp or Signal; you host it.
Microsoft Copilot Cowork
In preview for eligible Microsoft 365 plans; it can send email and manage your calendar, and runs prompts on a schedule.
Where Claude Cowork is better
It cannot touch your computer.
An octo works on a cloud machine of yours: no local folders, no desktop apps, no screen control. Send it the file or a link, or keep that job in Cowork.
It cannot open your Gmail, Outlook or calendar.
There is no inbox or calendar connector. Each octo can have its own email address: forward or CC mail to it and it answers in the thread, and only senders you allow get through.
It costs more to start than Claude Pro.
Pro is $50 a month after a $20 first month, against Claude Pro at $20. The $50 is usage you spend on models and machines, but if you only hand off a task now and then, Claude Pro is cheaper. Read more →
Octos sleep when idle.
After an hour with nothing to do the machine suspends and costs only storage; a message or routine wakes it. After 3 days asleep it restores from cold storage, so that first reply takes a few minutes.
Questions
What is the best Claude Cowork alternative?
It depends on why you are leaving. For any model with results in your chat and no server to run, octos on Octomind Cloud. To host it yourself, OpenClaw or Hermes Agent. If your work lives in Microsoft 365, Copilot Cowork. If you need your own desktop files and apps, stay with Cowork.
Claude Cowork vs OpenClaw: which should I pick?
Cowork is managed by Anthropic, uses Claude models only, comes with a paid Claude plan and can work in your local folders. OpenClaw is open source (MIT) and runs on your own computer, with hosted or local models and 20+ chat apps, but you install, update and secure it. Octomind sits between: managed machines, any model, results in Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp or email.
Can Claude Cowork send results to Telegram or Slack?
Anthropic’s Cowork help pages describe results in the task’s session and a push notification on your phone. Claude Code has a Telegram, Discord and iMessage bridge in research preview, but it only works while a Claude Code session runs on your machine. An octo sends routine reports to the Telegram, Slack, Discord or email chats you connect.
Does Claude Cowork need my computer to stay on?
Not for most scheduled tasks: they run on Anthropic’s servers. A task that needs local files or apps runs only on your computer, and Pro and Max tasks created before October 6, 2026 that ran locally keep doing so. An octo always works on a cloud machine of yours.
Can I still use Claude models on Octomind?
Yes. Claude models come through the built-in gateway like every other model, at the provider’s price plus 5%, billed from your plan. You can give one octo Claude and another a cheaper model.
How much does it cost compared with Claude Pro?
Claude Pro is $20 a month and includes Cowork within usage limits. Octomind Pro is $50 a month, $20 your first month, and includes $50 of usage across up to 10 octos; past that it spends prepaid credits at the same prices. Prices as of October 2026.
