A Hermes Agent alternative that keeps the corrections you give it

Correct Octomind once and it saves the fix as a markdown lesson, quoted from your own message. The next session recalls it before the first answer. Run it on your machine, or on Octomind Cloud and talk to it from Telegram, WhatsApp or Slack.

curl -fsSL https://octomind.run/install.sh | bash

Or skip the install: Octomind Cloud runs the same engine for you.

Verdict: stay with Hermes Agent or switch to octomind

Stay with Hermes Agent if

  • You want a desktop app. Hermes Desktop runs on macOS (Apple Silicon), Windows and Linux on the same agent as the CLI; Octomind has none.
  • You want the agent to write and refine its own skills without being asked. Hermes does that by default; in Octomind, compiling lessons into skills is opt-in.
  • Your chat app is Signal, Matrix, SMS, Microsoft Teams or another of the 28 platforms in the Hermes gateway table.
  • You want commands to run on Modal, Daytona, Singularity or Vercel Sandbox. Hermes ships seven terminal backends.

Switch to octomind if

  • You want its rules to come only from what you said. Every Octomind lesson quotes one of your messages verbatim, and a second check confirms the quote supports the rule; the agent's own guesses never become lessons.
  • Your memory file is full, or you want recall picked per task. Octomind ranks stored lessons against each request and sends the best ones in a pack of at most 2,000 tokens.
  • Most of your work happens in repos and CI. Octomind is a coding agent first, and its lessons are filed per project and per role.
  • You want no server at all. Octomind Cloud imports your ~/.hermes folder (memories, skills, cron jobs, the Telegram bot) in one step.

What it learns fromThe system prompt asks it to save non-trivial workflows as skills: repeatable multi-step work, dead ends that led to a working path, and your corrections. Skill writes happen by default. hermes-agent.nousresearch.comLessons come only from your corrections and the rules you state. An extractor first answers LEARN or NONE, keeps at most 3 lessons a pass, and never makes a lesson of what the agent worked out alone. src/supervisor/learning/extract.rs:16
Evidence behind each saved itemA memory persists only when the model calls the memory tool; the docs warn that weaker models can claim a save they never made. A background review after a turn can also save memory or patch skills. hermes-agent.nousresearch.comEach lesson must carry a verbatim quote of your message. Octomind checks the quote appears in your real messages, then a second model call confirms it supports the rule, or nothing is written. src/supervisor/learning/extract.rs:379

The pack is never written to the session log. src/supervisor/learning/inject.rs:14

One correction, recalled in a brand-new session

A throwaway repo called acme-api, a minimal role called coder, octohub:auto for every model call. In the first session we asked for a commit message, got "Fix typo in README", and replied that this repo always uses Conventional Commits with a scope. Octomind stored one lesson backed by that message. Below is a brand-new session asked for a different commit message: the debug log shows the exact 291-token pack sent before the first answer, with the lesson file path, and the reply follows the rule without being told.

octomind run coder --format plain -n demo2 -c 'log_level="debug"' < ../msg3.txt

How to switch from Hermes Agent

  1. Install Octomind and sign in

    One script puts the binary in ~/.local/bin. Signing in gives the default models, including the supervisor model that extracts and recalls lessons; you can point it at your own provider instead. Prefer no server? Start on Octomind Cloud and skip to step 2.

    curl -fsSL https://octomind.run/install.sh | bash
    octomind login
  2. Bring your Hermes setup over

    Both use SKILL.md folders, so copy your skills into ~/.config/agents/skills/ (keep name and description on one line each in the frontmatter). Put the durable lines from MEMORY.md and USER.md into your project AGENTS.md, and move each server under mcp_servers in ~/.hermes/config.yaml into a [[mcp.servers]] block in a .toml file in Octomind's config dir (~/.local/share/octomind/config/). On Cloud, pack ~/.hermes instead and upload it on the Import page: memories, skills, cron jobs and the Telegram bot come over with a preview first.

    cp -R ~/.hermes/skills/<skill-name> ~/.config/agents/skills/

    # ~/.local/share/octomind/config/hermes-mcp.toml
    [[mcp.servers]]
    name = "filesystem"
    type = "stdio"
    command = "npx"
    args = ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem", "/path/to/allowed/dir"]
    timeout_seconds = 30
    tools = []
    auto_bind = ["assistant:concierge"]

    # For Octomind Cloud instead: pack the folder, then upload it under Import
    tar czf hermes-export.tgz -C ~ --exclude='*/sessions/*' --exclude='*/logs/*' .hermes
  3. Run a job and correct it once

    Start a session in your project, ask for something, and when it gets a convention wrong, say what was wrong and what to do instead in one message. /done hands the conversation to the extractor in the background, and /learning list shows what was stored.

    cd ~/your/project
    octomind run
    # > Write a git commit message for this change: fixed a typo in README.
    # > No. In this repo commit messages use Conventional Commits with a scope,
    #   like `docs(readme): fix typo`. Rewrite it.
    /done
    /learning list

Other options worth a look

  • OpenClaw

    The closest like-for-like swap: MIT, 20+ chat apps and native apps for macOS, iOS, Android, Windows and Linux.

  • Claude Code

    If your work is mostly code and you already pay Anthropic: it keeps auto memory, notes it writes from your corrections and preferences, loaded each session up to 200 lines or 25 KB.

Where Hermes Agent is better

  • No desktop app

    Octomind runs in a terminal, in CI or behind a WebSocket server, and Cloud adds a browser panel. Hermes Desktop is a native app for macOS, Windows and Linux on the same agent as its CLI. Read more →

  • It does not write its own skills by default

    Hermes saves workflows as skills out of the box. Octomind stores lessons only; compiling them into skills, guidance or guards needs [supervisor.learning.evolution] enabled = true, and each candidate must win a randomized trial first. Read more →

  • Fewer chat apps, and none in the open-source binary

    Chat channels are a Cloud feature: Telegram, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, GitHub and email. There is no Signal, iMessage, SMS or Matrix; Hermes lists 28 platforms in one self-hosted gateway. Read more →

  • Its lessons come only from what you say out loud

    A wrong answer you fixed by hand, a silent failure or an uncommented success produces no lesson. There is also no published learning score, so judge it on your own sessions with /learning list. Read more →

  • No free cloud

    Hermes is free to self-host and Nous Portal has a free tier for free models. Octomind Cloud starts on Pro at $50 a month ($20 the first month); the free plan is the model hub only. Read more →

Questions

What is the best Hermes Agent alternative?

Hermes Agent alternatives split by why you are leaving. For the closest swap with the most chat apps, OpenClaw. For an agent that works in your repos and takes its lessons only from your corrections, each kept as an editable file, Octomind. If you mostly need a coding agent on a Claude plan, Claude Code.

Can I bring my Hermes memories and skills over?

Yes. On Octomind Cloud, pack ~/.hermes and upload it on the Import page; memories, skills, cron jobs and the Telegram bot come over after a preview, and API keys stay behind. With the open-source binary, copy skill folders into ~/.config/agents/skills/ and the durable lines from MEMORY.md and USER.md into AGENTS.md.

Does Octomind write its own skills like Hermes?

Not by default. Out of the box it stores lessons from your corrections and recalls them. Evolution, which compiles lessons into generated skills, guidance or guards, is opt-in, and a candidate is promoted only after a randomized trial scored by the verify-gate.

Is this a Hermes alternative I can run for free?

The binary is free and Apache-2.0; you pay only for model calls, including the supervisor calls that extract and recall lessons. In our run, the extraction after one correction cost $0.0008 on octohub:auto. Octomind Cloud is paid: Pro is $50 a month, $20 the first month.

Where are the lessons stored, and can I delete one?

As markdown files with YAML frontmatter in ~/.local/share/octomind/learning/<project>/<role>/ on macOS and Linux. Edit or delete them in any editor, or use /learning show and /learning delete inside a session.

Try it on the job Hermes Agent does for you now.

Apache-2.0 and any model. Install it, then follow the three steps above.

curl -fsSL https://octomind.run/install.sh | bash

Or have Octomind Cloud run it: $20 your first month, cancel anytime. Nothing to install.
